Hi

I am in the process of replacing my cutlass bearing. I have taken the prop shaft coupling apart and I am about to take the shaft out of the coupling, I have been reading about how to do this and have read that once it is apart you should buy a new coupling and then get the coupling and shaft machined so they go back together correctly. Is this what you have to do or can you just reconnect them.

Thanks for any help

Phil.

Also if there is anyone on here who has a strut-pro or knows where I could rent one from (I am in Nova Scotia) Could they let me know and this would save me the trouble of removing the shaft.

Yes. For a proper install the shaft side of the coupler needs to be machined to match the shaft and that coupler also needs to be faced -- thus to provide an accurate fit at install time. Obviously, both the shaft and coupler need to go the machinist together.

Maine Sail's articles are the best source for this.
Review http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/replacing_a_cutlass.

You will also need to do about packing the stuffing box. See http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/stuffing_box for guidance.

Also, make sure you lapp the propeller to the shaft for a very good fit where the propeller and shaft come together.

Maine Sail's advice on these points is detailed and his descriptions are completely reliable.

Thanks

I tried to get the coupler off but cannot move it at all, so I am thinking of getting a Split coupler and maybe adding a flexible coupling as well. Has anyone had an experience with these?

Thanks
