I pulled out my 1976 cat 27 a few days back and I noticed after running the engine all summer that the bracket that holds the prop shaft just before the prop has cracked the gelcoat or maybe even the fiberglass where it attaches to the body. I have sanded down about 1/8 - 1/4 inch and the crack seems to continue. I am not sure how far to dig... The hairlince crack in the hull is like a rectangle all the way around the bracket where it attaches to the boat. There was no excessive vibration when running the engine or never hit a thing... no leakage inside that I can find... I can't move the bracket by hand at all. BUT, the crack is still wet after 5 days, which tells me that there was leakage somewhere. Any idea what to do? I bought the boat without the motor running, so I don't know what the previous owner had experienced. It doesn't seem like the prop shaft is bent, the prop looks fine to the eye, i.e. no gashes, etc... them motor ran smooth... but then boat vibration is a matter of opinion, i guess, too. any help would be appreciated. Markus

an obvious answer...

...sorry to give you such an obvious answer but my first inclination is to have the boatyard manager take a look at it, or any other professional, that can give you an estimate for repair. It shouldn't cost you anything... perhaps 3 or 4 opinions might be needed a complete picture of the problem. Other than that, you might try posting a photo of the damage for some of the more experienced guys like Moody or John to venture an opinion.

propshaft bracket fiberglass crack

Thanks for the info... the problem is the boat is now at my farm. No boatyard manager around for quite a few miles. An estimate would run at least 200 - 300 bucks for someone to come out to my farm to see the boat, and I don't feel like hauling it to a boat yard for 2 - 4 hours. Then the question is the repair cost if necessary on top of that... might as well buy a new boat if I get a few estimates and then the repair cost... The idea of photo is excellent. I will take one tomorrow and post it with the post and put more up on my website... Thanks for the suggestions!

Mail the photo to the boatyard....

...if you don't want someone to come out. Then make a phone call to discuss it.

prop strut

Hi markus It looks like your strut is comeing loose maybe from a hit, maybe from the yards sling being placed on the shaft when pulling the boat.Ive seen this happen on a boat when a dockline wrapped the prop and stop the moter. It needs to be fixed. The strut is bolted on with 2 or 4 bolts the nuts are under the glass inside .The crack looks like the old putty is cracked and seeping water You need to gring around about 4" on the side and 12" long and let it dry.I would like to check around the fiting mith a M/M to see how wet the glass is .maybe dryit with two lites one on each side.If the strut is still snug you can just epoxy puddy the spot and sand smooth, prime and paint. You mite remove the old putty repuddy then lay up some glass around the strut sand prime paint.(much stronger) I live in NY and we have lots of guys that drive around fixing boats they are mobel they would fix that on the spot in a few hours. They dont charge you if they do the job.I think you could do the job your self grinding is half the battle .Let it dry over the winter Then fix it in the spring. My boat came home Tuesday I keep it in a lake 200 mils from home and have to drive there to work on it .I have a C30 1988 The boat looks real big driveing down the street and backing down my road was tight . It sits in frount of the garage and this weekend it gets wraped in a16 x36 framed garage with tarps over it. The guy nextdoor was looking at me funny with just the boat.My E mail is meow10950@yahoo.com if you need to talk.I build coustom homes my typing is not so good at work we brake big rocks into little rocks.
