I was testing my prop pitch by seeing the RPM's I got at wide open throttle (about 3800 by the way). At high RPM's the engine (3GM) smokes like a chimney. Is that normal?
..under the same conditions (WOT under load). Since it is trying to push it over hull speed, I suppose it's working hard. Could be injectors need cleaning. In fact, glad you reminded me. I certainly don't think it is unusual, although it is probably a question of degree. RD
Jim:From the information that I have regarding the 2GM/3GM engines it sounds like everything is OKAY. You want the engine to be able to rev to this range but you should not run it this way for very long. It is pumping a LOT of fuel to the system and that is what is causing the smoke (black) too much fuel.Your engine is rated at a max of 3600 with a sustained rating at 3400. Normal operating range should be 2500 -2900. This operating range will give you the optimum operating range for the engine and not cause coking or overheating.
I read somewhere that at wide open throttle, the injector timing is retarded to assist in cold weather starting. Don't know if that is true or not. If true, this is not a normal operating condition for the engine, and could explain the smoking. Does it still smoke if back the throttle off just a little?
