I have a 1984 Hunter 31 with a 13 hp yanmar. It began smoking badly two years ago and only producing about 2200-2300 rpm's at max throttle. We overhauled the engine last year and the problem has persisted. This year we had the fuel injector pump checked and worked on because the timing appeared to be off. Again the problem persists. The engine starts and runs good and runs well over 3000 rpm's in neutral with little or no smoke. There may be some barnacles but previously this had litte effect on the situation. Also we have a two blade Max-Prop. My question is, what should the pitch setting be for this engine? Unfortunately, I don't know what the gear ratio is on my engine, but thought you might have some suggested pitch setting I could start with. Also, could you e-mail me the sheet with the different markings that make up different pitch settings. Thank you, Greg

Call Max

Call Max-Prop on the West Coast. They have a great customer service rep. They've seen and heard it all, believe me. When you're in perfect pitch, it's like music!

overpitched prop

Barnacles make a huge diference, don't discount them when you are having engine problems. Clean them off. Your prop sounds overpitched and as I understand it the boat must be hauled to change the pitch on your max prop. I think you direct the rest of your questions to Max Prop, you will need to look at your tranny to get the correct gear ratio then call max prop for the correct pitch, here is the link.
