I've recently purchased a new H340 and want to look for different options on aftermarket propellers. The boat is equipped with the standard (factory) two-blade. At 3000rpm it will push the boat at 6.5kts. It also prop walks seriously to port in reverse. Engine is the 27hp Yanmar. Questions 1. Will a three-blade allow me similar speeds but at lower rpm.???? 2. What about the "feathering" props that I see advertised.???Are they worth the additional (considerable) cost.???? 3. Which three-blade would be the optimum diameter/pitch.???? Thanks in advance for any imput.

Had the same problems and questions on our 430..

If you go back several weeks in Big Boats you will find a discussion about props. We opted for the Kilian modified prop. It stopped the walk in reverse and added speed. We use our Hunter mostly for crusing and have been very happy with the results. I also posted some photos of the modified prop in the photo forum. If your interested in some straight advise you might try.Tim Kilian at Kilianprop.com. Dick McKee S/V onstellation

Love the Maxi feathering on the 340

Put a maxi feathering prop (Source:pYI) and love it. Installed it myself (with the assistance of friend). Improves speed substantially in light winds, gives great power in reverse, and am not noticing prop walk. We dock stern to in a 15 ft. double fingered slip at about 2-3 knots however, due to cross winds. We have a two blade. The three blade would provide a much smoother drive, however (source: friend has a 3 bladed on a Catalina 34) Also note that the maxi is adjustable so that one can set it to your boat, engine, and mood. They apparently also make one that is adjustable while the boat is in the water, though I have no experience with that. Would I do it again, you bet, but I would strongly consider the 3 blade, though with my limited motoring the 2 blade works for me.

Get a 3 blade feathering prop

Mine is a Max-Prop and has all of the advantages others have listed. It really makes a big difference. Look at the archives.

Prop size

I have a 2000 340. It also came with the standard 2 blade prop. I had a 3 bladed 'DynaJet 15 RH 13' prop put on and it works great. The 3 blade prop will get you back faster in rough weather, tough currents etc. It delivers more thrust and therefore has to be better for the engine (Yanmar 27hp) and you also. Go for the 3 blade it worth it. The difference is noticable.
