Past season I experienced alot of prop growth. I'm considering some type of coating for the prop and shaft on my sailboat.(hunter 2004 326) Any ideas?

Here's one

In my many readings over many years I read that a very minor current (electrical charge) to the prop shaft would do the trick. I have always been afraid to try it because of a fear of electrolysis on my expensive Max Prop., so I too scrape and polish my prop by hand. Anyone ever tried it?

Same here

I have the same problem here,( New Orleans area ) if I don't use the boat for a fairly long time. I just accept it and scrape it when necessary. Don't know of any kind of anti foulant that will stay on there long. There are several products that are supposed to work, but I have my doubts and haven't tried any of them. If you find something that works, post it up so we will all know.

good experience with Petit prop paint

Petit makes a barnacle barrier prop paint in a spray can, sold here as well as most chandleries, which works well here in New England waters.

I have been spraying

the bronze shaft and prop on my H28.5 with Interlux Primocon primer and then painting them with 2 coats of whatever modified hard epoxy bottom paint I have on hand. This just about gets me through and 8-month season here on the moderately fouling Chesapeake. At the end of the season, most of the bottom paint and primer are gone and I usually have a half dozen or so barnacles. No system is perfect and this is "good enough" for me.

Ditto

Petit Zinc Coat Barnacle Barrier .... best barnacle preventer Ive ever used. Last two years everyone in my marina had HUGE barnacle balls growing on their props/hub .... 'cept me. I put on several thousands of miles per year and the Petit stays fairly fixed on the prop.

Hi Steve, four years ago when I redid the bottom...

on our boat, after cleaning and polishing the prop I applied two thick coats of Desitin baby rash ointment to the prop and shaft. Each year I have a diver check the hull and this year was the first that he had to remove two barnacles from the prop; Other than that it was clear. We keep our boat in sea water year around. Terry
