I just finished installing my new prop guard/duct. The old one was bent by a hit and run stink potter. This duct is smaller and at the 6 o'clock position is very close to the tip of the prop. This duct is also longer for more squish. Testing it out this weekend at the Parrot Head boat rally on Cascade Lake in central Idaho. Results to follow. John S

I'll bet you meant rudder
Hi Steve Paul This last weekend I noticed that I could swing my rudder over far enough to rub on the prop. Having the propellor contained is a big safety item for me. I suppose somehow someone could get near the running motor, but I watch that pretty carefully. I have kicked the exposed prop when swimming around the back of the boat, so the shroud helps protect against that occurrance. I motor a lot and I am hoping for a performance increase better than the last duct, which was great. John S

Damned this getting older thingy, tiller, rudder what the heck. I never got around to putting a shroud guard on like you have. I think it makes all the sense in the world. Can't figure out why all outboards don't come with them installed. I always wanted to install an anticavitation guard that looks like a whales tail fins. Thought that might keep the "rudder" out of the prop too. Steve P.

Any outboard that will reach planing speeds will lose effectiveness with a shroud. But for efficient push they are definitely superior in performance. Ocean tugs have them, they are on all remote deep sea diving robots (with their battery power limitations). But if the motor will be used at speeds over 15 MPH they detract from the top speed. I'd like to make a speed run with and without the shroud but I will be making rum drinks tomorrow so I stay away from tools (due to previous disasters) "Thems that dies will be the lucky ones" John S
