Any suggestions for anti fouling on a bronze prop in New England waters. last year I used Desitin ointment and it had fair results. still has a few barnacles and growth after a 6 month season. Anyone have anythging that works well in salt water?? Ron C-30 Chels-A-Bella 3532

I 've had limited success

...keeping barnacles off my bronze shaft and prop by wet sanding them smooth and clean, spraying them with 2 coats of Interlux Primocon followed by 2 coast of whatever hard modified epoxy bottom paint I have on hand. At the end my 8 month season, a lot of paint is worn off but I had only a few barnacles. This is in the moderately salty and fouling part of the Chesapeake Bay where I keep my boat. I'm not sure I can do better than this.

I have heard of folks down here mixing tobasco sauce in with the bottom paint used on the prop. I have not done it but heard they had be3tter results than without. ??

leave it be

If you have good bottom paint, zincs, bonding etc... Your prop should be fine all by itself. If not, I would recommend checking your through hulls, bonding and such. Is it within reach of a simple scrubbing now and then; do you ever get underway?

Ron, Your prop performs much better and efficiently when clean, a yacht can lose mucho speed and h.p. with dirty prop. I always dive mine, but do use a wax when on the hard, but Have it on very good athority that STP works well. I have yet to try that, but I will this summer when I haul.
