During the past 14 yrs of owning a MAXPROP,I have tried many different paints and additives to keep the barnacles,off the prop and shaft. The growth never interfears with the feathering or operation of the MAXPROP. Lets here what works. Thank You , KW

I haven't found anything that works permanently either, but the best I found so far is this. Before putting on the new zincs I sprayed the prop and shaft with outdrive marine paint, clear in color. I bought it in a spray can from West Marine for about $9 and I have enough left over to do this year again. It's not a perfect solution but it cut the barnacles to one or two and kept all other growth to zero. Much better than if left untreated but as I said not a perfect solution. It wears of by the end of the season so it needs to be done annually. Good Luck Bob Knott H380

Outdrive Spray Works For Me
I second Bob's reccomendation of outdrive spray. I've used it for years with very little barnacle growth. I would Not spray the shaft first though because you may be insulating the zinc from the shaft and diminish its effect. Instead I sand the shaft to get a good contact and then mask the zinc for spraying. Stan

...is an almost guaranteed way to keep growth off the shaft, prop, and even the bottom! Wouldn't that be nice? Never letting your boat sit anywhere for more than about a week or two. Sorry, just dreamin' again. Jay 59

Hello Ken: How is Deb? Ok I hope. No more G-Kids? Are you out yet? Anti-Fouling is a very difficult topic because we are not always sure that the material we are placing on the propeller does not create more problems then it fixes. Most metal-based paints will create a galvanic reaction to the base metal of the propeller. If we apply a barrier coat to the prop first, we may cause oxygen starvation. I brings this up to only warn those of you out there, that in most cases here at our office, a propeller which has been sent in for repair will cost more, when a topical material has been used to try to ward off the pesky bugs. ..special formulated for stern gear and propellors antifauling ( white) more protective than other options ( but still partial effective only), and only if applied according the advised primer AND intermediat coat.(quite expensive packagge..) Left it unpainted or with plain antifauling , or other 'witches' formulas proved unhelpfull for me (open sea water).
