Morning,

Today is the day. We are painting the bottom today and perhaps part of the interior. I will post pics later today of the progress we make. The whole bottom paining issue is so nasty that I know for a fact that I will never attempt to do it myself again.;)

I was sitting in the cockpit in the tiller operators position looking down the port side and just now came to realize that I felt awfully small and there was an awful lot of boat out in front of me. It kinda gave me pause to reflect that in terms of boat, this is a relatively small one. I would really feel insignificant on a really big boat.:D

My helper just arrived onward and upward.

Tom,
You've done a lot of work in a very short time. The boat is looking great.

When your ready for a break, I'm sailing every weekend now :) Can't promise any wind this weekend, but plenty of heat.

Well all the best laid plans have gone awry. No paint yet, we even have the wrong kind of paint for trailering. We had the brushes and rollers at the ready and then I decided to read the can and found out that the paint that I had wanted was not sent to me. I had asked for a HARD paint for fresh water that would with stand the rigors of going on and off the trailer numberous times in a summer.

What I had was a Soft Abliative copper infused paint for anti fouling in salt water.

What to do? I called a friend who's life revolves around sailing (designer, builder) and asked him what to do.

It seems that since my below the water line is now clean of all the old paint, but is scuffed up with 80 grit paper, I would need to seal it again, since the gel coat was breached and that old 70's sailboat were prone to blistering. While my boat has no blisters, by sanding with 80 grit, I have made it vulnerable to blistering in the future unless I seal it.

He recommended Epoxy Paint.

Later on he emailed me and had the brand EasyPoxy to recomend it is a one part Epoxy (polyurethane sealer/barrier paint). Since I already had a gallon of High Gloss White EasyPoxy I was going to use on the interior, our plan today is to pressure wash the hull today and paint with the EasyPoxy tomorrow.

It is raining today and that would seem to be a good time to wash it while it is already wet.

We will see....

More later

Tom,
I noticed on an other post you listed the price you paid. (not nice to ask) I am very happy with my other purchase, but thought you might find it amusing that I had offered $1200 for the boat and $700 for the Honda outboard. BUT, I did insist on seeing that the sails and other hardware were present. Which was why I was waiting for his return phone call.... I am still happy that the boat I finally purchased as it is not very heavy. That was the reason I sold my Chysler. I wanted a larger boat, but less weight. I ended up with a smaller boat, but much less weight. Good luck with your boat. I wouldn't mind seeing it when it is done. Mark

Mark, You are welcome to come and see it any time. We will be taking it up to Lake Pepin in a month or so and leaving it up there all summer, rather than back and forth.

Yes, the price was $1500 + $300 for the outboard. Total $1800 + I also bought the band saw for a $100. Then I had new tires put on the trailer for $325. Darn glad I did that.

All the stuff that Shane thought was missing was in fact in the boat. Main was in the Jib bag. I have since bought 3 additional sails for this boat. Got them from a previous American 26 owner in Florida for $300. Main, Jib and Genoa.

Rudder was in a quarter berth. Cushions were all in the main berth area. There was a ton of extra stuff too. Odd though was what was missing. The 4 sheaves in the mast head were not there. Why??? Clevis pins and cotters were gone too. I have had a devil of a time finding new sheaves. Finally just found them last week at DuckWorks.com

All the line was in good repair, but obviously at least 23 years old. I got new halyards and that was about it. Some of the rivets on the mast were broken and one of the spreader boots has to be replaced to. All in all, I am quite pleased with the boat.

My helper finally called late last night and said he would be here this AM at 7:00. Told him not to bother. I will paint the boat today by myself.

Look forward to meeting you.
