My Bristol 35.5c is equipped with an old Profurl Behind the Mast slot furled fitted with three slot guides. It is incredibly difficult to deploy the mainsail. It's necessary to use a winch pulling the outhaul to unfurl some or all of the sail. My documentation does not discuss tuning or maintenance in any detail. Has anyone had a similar problem with this rig that they were able to resolve? Does anyone have tuning information?

Don't know anything about your unit but I do have Selden in mast on my Hunter 36 so maybe some things I can suggest to do to help,is the main haylard tight and are you making sure you are furling the sail in very tight so no bunching of the sail is happening.
Start by pulling the sale all the way out and adjust the main halyard as tight as possible with the winch but be careful to not over do it and check the turning barrels where the sail attachs for need of lube and if everything looks OK than furl it back in but keep tension on the out haul so that the sail wraps nice tight and smooth with out any bunching up of the sail.
Also check the rig won't hurt making sure the mast doesn't have too much bend in it and everything else is OK.
If none of that helps I would call the Profurl for help and maybe they can suggest things to do and maybe some one who knows or installs their equipment.

I have had experience with a Pro Furl behind the mast furling system and it was so bad we threw it away and installed a Selden in Mast furling mainsail system (mast - that is. A new mast). Selden used to make an add on furling mainsail system that bolted onto the after section of anyone's mast, but then they later developed a system in side of the mast and it was cheaper and better to just replace your mast instead of retrofitting the after market device (which no longer is available). The Pro Furl system was so crappy that all one would do was pull their hair out messing with the main. The Selden system was like velvet.
Thanks for your replies. Last year I relieved the main halyard and it helped. This year I have tried both tight and loose halyard tension but the is little difference. I have tried raising and lowering the topping lift. Although there is slight difference, it's not significant or repeatable. we are preparing to make the big leap in a couple of years; Duluth to Bahamas. I was hoping to confine the major upgrades to just the engine. But a complete mast rig rig replacement is a bit discouraging. Is a new mast capable of in-mast furling a huge investment? I love the hull sailing performance (a sailing race was canceled last weekend while my mate and I enjoyed strong downwind sailing!). Is the CDL rig a reasonable alternative?

I do not know how hard it would be to remove the unit and go back to regular battan main,how is the add on profurl installed to the original mast and can it be removed and have new sail made cheaper than inmast new mast.
