Questions??? 1.On my 78-30 how do I determine that mast compression exists and to what degree. 2.I have a 1gm10 and 3 bladed 13x13 screw. On some transmissions or gear, the shaft is locked to prevent gear problems,is this the case with this yanmar and from a drag point of view, more drag turning than locked????? I have had my 78-30 for two years and have been through all her systems but I do not have the answers for the above questions. Please help!!! Bob Haskell,Ketchikan,Alaska

Mast compression

Bob, I have a '77 h30 and also have mast commpression at the base. You probably will notice a "dishing" effect at the mast base. The coring under the mast became wet and has compressed the base about a 1/4 inch or so. I discovered the wet core when I replaced the mast light deck connections. Inspection of the I-beam on the keel revealed little corrosion and the sole under the compression post appears to be OK. As a result of the compressed coring the mast probably has a bit more rake than originally. Hang your main halyard to the deck and measure the distance from the mast base. Mine was about a foot giving me under 5 degrees of rake. (If my trig calculations are correct) I just had the rigger inspect and tune the rig and will continue to monitor the situation. Hopefully she is as compressed as she is going to get. If not, well, it only takes money. Can't sail money. Hope this answers question 1, sorry I can't help with question 2. Also, check the archives. Awhile back someone wrote an extensive article complete with pics about compression post problems and repairs. -Roland S/V Fraulein II

Bob; Hi!...I'm in the same 'Boat' as you on some things..... I dont know about mast compression other than checking the rigging tension..as for the engine, I have a '79 boat with the YSM 12 (about the same as yours)...you get less drag with the transmission in neutral & the prop free spinning. as long as there's oil in the gear box, it will not damage the gears...... I need info on the plastic ports on my boat. The UV destroys the plastic & I need to replace my windows. Any ideas?? John
