I am new to sailing and diesel engines as I have always owned gaoline powered boats. I am having a problem getting it started. It has a 17HP Volvo. It started and ran for about 2 or 3 minutes then quit. I removed the fuel filter and found water in the diesel. I pumped out the water and repalaced it with fresh diesel fuel but I still can not get it to start. How do you prime a diesel and how do you check for air in the lines? I do not see anything on the engine that easily allows this. Can someone give me some advice on this motor? -Thanks

Generic Answer

I am not familiar with the Volvo you have, but the basics are this for most diesels. Go to the injectors and loosen the fuel line. back up to the high pressure pump output (the other end of the line you just loosened at the injectors) loosen this. Loosen the input side of the same pump. Follow that line back to the filter and ultimately the low pressure fuel pump opening connections as you go. The low pressure pump may have a small manual primer pump on top (look for something that will move. Put something in the area under the engine to catch the fuel that will spill... make sure you don't pump any of it over board. Start pumping until clean fuel comes out the first fitting, tighten it and continue. At the high pressure pump outlet, you may have to turn over the engine to get it to come out the other side. If so, pull the stop handle so it won't start and shut off the raw water so you won't fill the muffler and back flow raw water into the engine. Continue until clean fuel comes out the injector feeds and then make sure everything is tight. Note: Don't continuously run the starter motor without letting it cool off. Open the raw water and push back in the stop handle. It should start. My lawyer says I should not give out advise but if I do remind people to wear proper safety gear (eye protection probably important in this case) and to read and follow the manufacturers recommendations. Good Luck George
