The bimini on my 34 ft. sailboat is about 4 or 5 years old, and is in good shape, but I am having trouble zipping up the zippers, its hard to get them started and feels hard as I zip them up, I'm scared I might tear the sticthing as I,m zipping them up. The zippers are the large white plastic types that are common on sail covers and other boat canvas. I was wondering if there is anything I could use to lube the zippers or if anyone has any tricks that would help with this problem. thanks

I lubricate bimini and dodger zippers with sun tan lotion. Don't laugh, it works!

Don, try some silicone spray on the zippers, and a drop or two of WD-40 on your snaps.

Don, your zippers have been destroyed by the UV in the sunlight. My experience says they last about 5 years without protection. I have replaced all of my zippers for the same reason, not hard to do yourself. Sailrite sells the zippers. You should use "303" Aerospace Protectant for the zippers after you replace them. Apply a few times a year but do not get on the sunbrella fabric. There is another "303" called Fabric Guard that you use on the fabric to keep it waterproof. Lastly I have found that sewing little flaps and strips of velcro to my canvas allows me to keep the zippers protected and make them just about unlimited life. First make a flap the right lenght and sew a strip of velcro to one side. Sew the flap to one side of the canvas. Now add the mating velcro to the other side of the canvas so the flap covers the zipper and use the velcro to hold it down. When ou need access to the zipper just pull up the velcro flap and voila. Very easy to do, cheap except your time, and no more hassles afterwards. Happy repairs, dave

Zippers on Board

You've already gotten the advice I'd have given, and I learned something too - suntan lotion!? After 7 years of liveaboard cruising in the tropic islands I've found that wonderful as they are, plastic zippers don't/won't/can't last when exposed to UV. We spent months at a time in the out islands where finding materials to make boat repairs of any type is difficult at best, my first choice is always to do whatever project in the manner least likely to fail. In the case of plastic zippers that means having every exposed zipper covered with a sacrificial trim. I learned that useful as hook-and-loop Velcro-type closures are, they don't last out doors either. So, I would choose metal snaps; Sailrite's "common sense" fasteners, or even rope ties where possible, before using something which will degrade. This will save you time, annoyance and lots of $$$. NOTE: If or when you have any canvas work done you will be wise to add "all exterior zippers to be covered with matching Sunbrella" on your specifications. My favorite source of information on these kinds of boat projects is: "This Old Boat" by Don Casey. Coast Guard or no, Chapman's goes overboard before this truely practical, light hearted book does!
