What kind is it

We had a Hood continous line furler. POS in my opinion. I tried to mess with it but decided to replace it.

Try the site

You should be able to find a web site for the manufactuer of your furller. They generally have a manual you can download and read the troubleshooting section. Good luck

I had an 86 30ft Catalina with a Hood furler...

....and it was the continuous line system. I hated it. I changed over to a single line system buy switching the bottom portion of the furler. This was cheaper than buying a whole new system and I was much happier. If you have the money though, I think there are better systems out there.

Worn out on my 85 C30

My 85 came with a Cruiz Designs roller furler, it was a piece of crap, totally worn out. It had the endless line too, the alignment guides were all worn out, the line would jump out of the track at the WORST times. We fought with it for a couple years and (almost) got in some real trouble getting through the Straights of Mackinaw and under the Mackinaw Bridge, houling winds in mid day, a 150 genny that won't roll up all the way, water over the bow and beating in. Then my Admiral said "BUY A NEW ONE" WHAT A GREAT DAY!! It was about $1500.00 and a new head stay but now PRICLESS. Good luck Dean www.blowinganddrifting@yahoo.com

Many options

1. What manufacturer is it? 2. If it's a HOOD call Hood, they've come out with a much better replacement. They had an older replacement that swapped out the bottom fitting and made it single line. A newer model is now available and they may offer it at a discount price. A friend got one at the Chicago boat show last year. 3. If you want to replace what you have with something different, your boat your choice. Do an archive forum search on roller furling (exact phrase) or ProFurl, Harken, Schaefer or any of the other manufacturers and what you'll find is just about everyone who bought a new one is happy with their choice. Would you expect anything different? :)

Time to replace......

The Harken cruising furler, unit 1, it's like butter! Call me for a better price, we have to publish MAP pricing. http://shop.catalinaowners.com/detail.htm?fno=20&group=869&cat=1606

Check the halyard.

Check the halyard tension. On my Harken furler the halyard tension is critical. Too tight and the system will jam under load, which is just when you might need to shorten sail. Ours seemed fine until a sudden squall and we were stuck, unable to shorten our headsail. In a few minutes the jib was damaged. The fix to the furling problem was to loosen the halyard. Plus the $200 to repair the headsail. All has been well since. Also, check the halyard attachment at the top swivel for correct angle and fair lead as well as for a wrap.

Check furler line

Be sure the furler line going into the drum is at the correct angle.
