I was watching a marine show and noticed an advertisement for ProActive Cleaning system and was wondering if anyone has used it with sucess or failure - or just comment...

http://www.buyproaction.com/

I am not affliated in any way to the product and don't really need it. I believe that good maintenence could prevent most oders but wondering about the benefits seen in real world applications of this product.

Did you happen to notice that the active ingredient is...

Chlorine dioxide, which is highly corrosive and destructive to rubber and flexible PVC. From their website:

[FONT=Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif]"Pro Active products are so effective because Chlorine Dioxide is a gas, therefore it is able to penetrate every nook and cranny of any space, it can also penetrate the fibers of porous materials like upholstery, carpets and curtains."

So I don't think I'd recommend using it on a boat.

I have used this stuff and have to say I was shocked by the results! I had a friend with a newly purchased boat that had a terrible cigarette smoke smell inside - he tried everything from steam cleaning the carpets, chemical odor killers etc, nothing had long lasting effects. I told him I saw this product on TV and was keen to buy it for him to try. We set off 1 proaction 24 and came back the next day. The smell was ALMOST gone!! not completely though, so I set off another to finish the job - it worked, there is no more reminance of the smoke smell!

Also regarding the corrosive argument - I contacted the company and was told that studies have shown Chlorine Dioxide in gas form to not be corrosive, however liquid form can be - so I guess this is the confusion. I know they are selling the stuff and will probably say anything, but they did provide me with a bunch of links to studies to prove their point!

Two applications to get rid of smoke odor IN THE AIR that may or may not return makes it a very expensive air freshener IMO. Get back us next spring after the boat's been closed up all winter. If the smoke odor hasn't returned, it may be something worth trying.
