There's one in the next slip and I've had to board it a few times to fix broken dock lines, etc. Our dock does not extend to the cockpit and it is a real pain to board mid-ships because it has no side deck. The cabin top is also the entire beam width, so you also have to climb over the cabin top to go forward. Roomy inside and good cockpit. As long as you have a dock that extends to the cockpit, boarding should be ok. Owner told me it is pretty tender above 12 knots, but that is just his opinion. He also does not like that the only sheet winches are on the cabin top and he can't reach them from behind the wheel. Probably not an issue with a tiller.

Hunter vs 22 Cat

I am 71 and have a Hunter 26. The 24 is similar without the enclosed porti pot. It has a lot more room inside and in the cockpit than the Cat22. We find it very comfortable and I don't miss having to be crawling around down below. Being water ballast it goes to 15-20 degrees quickly but then locks into its grove. I have a tiller not the wheel. The larger cockpit is great for friends or grandkids. It just depends upon what you are looking for, but I love this boat (my 4th boat).

I purchased a H240 July 2013 as my first sail boat and really like it. It is easy to trailer and sail in 10 knots or below single handed. A little more of a challenge above 10 knots when by yourself. I agree with the tenderness above 12 knots but with the right two people sailing I can keep at at 30-35 degrees as long as you want to if you like that sort of excitement. I also have a tiller and have gotten use to it and i really like the size of the cockpit. If there is anything i don't like about the boat is the sheet winches and cleats on the cabin top. I have to stand up in the companionway to work the jib sheets every time we tac.

Just got back from sailing around the Straights of the Mackinac over Labor Day weekend. It was Great Time! Two of us slept comfortably in the cabin at the Mackinaw Island State harbor. Do wish i had the enclosed head like the H260.

I know both boats assuming that you are referring to the 240 Hunter as I use to be a dealer for both. First, both boats are well made so we will not go into construction although others have their own opinions.

The room in the cockpit should be given consideration for your age. There is no question that the cockpit of the 240 has more room. The 240 has a walk thru transom with a fold down ladder whereas on the Catalina 22, you have a stern rail to climb over to access the boarding ladder. The halyards on both boats are led back to the cockpit as with all sail control as well. Both boats have a porta poti placement inside the cabin but the 240 cabin is roomier.

The 240 Hunter is water ballast and on the Catalina 22, it is either a fixed or wing keel depending on the style keel. If the Catalina 22 is a swing keel, it is easier to load onto a trailer than the keel version.

As for docking, I would suggest for you a long finger pier for your age. It does not make a difference to me as to which boat on this point.

Now this will be stepping on many toes. For small boats to include the two mentioned, generally you will sail faster flatter and that is true for the Hunter 240 and Catalina 22. Anything over 14 degree heeling is unnecessary as I use to race both competitively and for your age this should be seriously considered along with anyone in the cockpit. I sailed against the best and a lot depends on the winds, sail control and amount of sail that is necessary.

Good luck in your decision.
