Is there a cheaper alternative to a Racor R24S diesel fuel filter. This is used in a waterseparator type filter system. Does NAPA or Fram have a version that would be cheaper or should I simply replace the primary filter system with a brand that uses cheaper filters

There is no substitute (sp?)

After seeing the gunk that was in my filters, that did NOT make it to the engine..and after seeing what water fuel can do, I will accept no substitute for the geniune filters. Have you tried Torrenson Marines Diesel Direct or West Marine for filters? By the time you re-order and re-order from you NAPA guy, (after going to the lake to try them and spilled diesel on the sole) you will just order 'em next time. Oh sorry, I didn't know you worked for AutoZone Hee Hee

Cheap filters

Carisea; Forget the cheap stuff. Always use top quality; when your engine quits in a tight spot, you'll wish you'd gone with Racor. That's not to say Racor will guarantee the engine won't quit at the worst possible time, but it does improve the odds.

Cheap filters ?

There is an old saying that says you get what you pay for. And Fram Filters had a TV commercial years ago portraying an old mechanic showing a bunch of worn out crankshaft bearings and saying: "Bearing job, about $400, (it really was years ago !) Oil Filter, about $8. I don't care, you can pay me now or later..." A R24S retails for around $21 at WM or BoatUS. How much cheaper is the off brand going to be ? And unless you really put in a lot of hours on the engine, you are not going to change the filter more than once or twice per year. As Andy, Stephen and Larry point out, the difference in price is not worth the hassle or the risk. Look for something else to save mobey. Good Luck
