Pressurized hot water not working

The yard did not check the water when they commisioned the boat in the spring. There is cold coming out of both faucets but no hot water. Any suggestions on what to check for a quick easy fix? Would love some hot water for a weekend cruise! Thank you, Andrea

Is the breaker for the water heater on?

Unless your water heater is fitted with a heat exchanger, that's the most obvious reason the water isn't getting hot. If that's not the problem--AND it's not a heat exchanger model, I suspect it's just time for a new heating element. Fortunately, heating elements are pretty much a "universal" part and easy to swap out. Just make sure the wattage is the same. If you DO have a heat exchanger, my guess is--the yard (correctly) bypassed the water heater when they winterized and overlooked putting it back online when they de-winterized. That's just a matter of disconnecting a couple of hoses from each other and reconnecting 'em to the water heater.

Check the heater hose.

Andrea: Check the water heater. There should be a hose that runs from the engine to the heater and then out of the heater to the engine. The hot water from the engine heaters the water. The other method is the shore power. This runs off of AC electricity (assuming you are not on a mooring). There should be a circut breaker that will allow the water heater to turned on/off as required. My bet is the water heater has been completely bypassed (for what ever reason) during winter de-commissioning and they never re-hooked it up for the sailing season.

Circuit Breaker Inside the Water Heater Panel

Most water heaters have a circuit breaker inside the panel connected directly to the heating element. In the event of an overheating situation the breaker will trip. This happens if there is not enough water in the tank and the heating element becomes exposed. So if you turn on the shore power but don't turn on the pressure water pump switch the tank may not be full and you can trip this breaker. Open the panel with a screwdriver, pull back the fiberglass insullation and push the red button that says reset. MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF ALL POWER TO THE BOAT SO YOU DON"T ELECTROCUTE YOURSELF!!!! Now fill the tank and see if it fixes the problem. If you get hot water under power from the engine this is most likely the cause. Best regards, dave
