Pressure water pump recommendations

My fresh water system pressure pump just died. Since I have family arriving for a Memorial Day weekend cruise I need to run out and replace it fast. I don't have an accumulator tank so it seems like I need to get either a pump with an internal bypass (that's what the old pump was) or one with a variable speed motor. From the advertising, the variable speed seems like a better desing, but I found a couple reviews online on a Par and a Shurflo varible speed pump and both had mixed reviews some loved them others said they were just as loud as other pumps and kept breaking). Anyone have any experience or recommendations on types of water pumps? Thanks!

Jabsco experience

I installed a Jabsco Sensor Max 14 variable speed pump this winter. 3.7 gpm at 25 psi. I am pleased with it. It isn’t completely silent but is a big improvement. It has eliminated the constant cycling of the old pump from full speed to off and back again with the annoying pulsing and excessive noise. The only thing I might do differently is get one of the higher-pressure versions. Jabsco makes four models from 25 psi to 60 psi. The lower pressure model I have works fine and probably saves on water usage, but if you prefer a strong stream, you might want to look at one of the other models. Shureflow makes higher pressure versions as well, but I wasn't looking for high water pressure.

Same here

I also have the Jabsco Sensor Max 14. Installed it over two years and I've lived on the boat in Toronto for one year including the winter and sailed to the Caribbean and back and have had absolutely no problems with it. Pressure seems adequate to me.

You sure it is bad?

I thought mine was bad too until I replaced it and then found that the tank outlet was plugged with salt from previous owner shock treating the tank. If your pump runs without pumping, you might want to try disconnecting the hose from the tank and see if the pump will pump from a bucket before you go spend a hundred bucks.

Variable Speed - a must

Added a Shurflo Smart Sensor Variable Speed a couple of years ago and was pleasantly surprised. Motor increases speed to match demand. No need for an accumulator tank. One of the best improvements I've made. Only complaint is the noise - at "full bore" it's noticeably loud. Ned and Tani Strain s/v Family Therapy 1995 h336 Chicago
