I own a 1982 Hunter 30'. I have a small leak in the pressure block area. The pump handles it fine --- but now the pressure block is falling all apart. It looks to be three similar size blocks of wood wrapped by a metal strap. I would like to replace this mess with new wood. I was wondering if any other owner has replaced the wood and can it be done without taking the vessel out of the water. I am convinced that the leak occured when the boat was taken out of the water. Prior to painting the bottom there was no leak.

What is a pressure block? That's a new term to me. Where is it located besides under the waterline? Is it by the keel?

Thanks!

compression block -- is probably the correct term. It is located beneath the mast -- but in my case the mast does not come through the cabin top.

Sounds like you are referring to the "compression post" which is right in front of the bulkhead that separates the main cabin and the head on the center line of the boat. Check out the archives. There are many listings for this repair as well as the support that is under the floor and transmits the load from the post to the keel.

Hi David,

As said before, there are many references on this Hunter site, including mine, exactly about the rotted compression post, and how to repair it. I just replaced the compression post on my H31 this winter…and boy am I glad I did!

Don’t risk losing your rig (mast etc.) on this condition. If you’re somewhat handy with common tools and carpentry, you can replace the compression post yourself.

If you would like, contact me direct.

Good luck with the project.

Mike
