Hi, I recently sold my first boat and am considering buying a 1996 H26. I'm wondering if I can tap into the experience and expertise of current H26 owners to compile a checklist of things to look for / be wary of..? I have no prior experience with water ballast or even a boat of this size (prior boat was a steel swing keel 20 footer).

Thanks in advance - with your help, I'm sure I can make a good buying decision.

Test sail it. Make sure the swing keel works smoothly up and down, clunk should be heard at both full up and full down. Pain in the butt to fix.

I have a H260 same boat .
Just redid the swing keel . Never heard the thud up . Maybe on a 240 but it takes a bit of force to raise 110 lbs on a small fulcrum.
Things to look for .
Leaks . Is their mold or signs off damp. Under the seats and below the aft bed ( that's the bilge area on this boat)
Standing rigging side stays . How bent ( not expensive to replace, but things add up. Rudder condition . Sails how old if original how worn.
Outboard condition.
These boats can be relatively cheap to fix and the ballast tank can only be damaged by leaving it with water in it in colder northern temps.
Look at the owners mods and you will soon get an idea off the common upgrades and if you boat has any . A good sign off a cared for boat.
Gel coat will have crazes and lines. These are light boats that flex like speedboats. So if none deep not a concern.

Maxincalgary;

Good points. the fellow sent me an email and I responded as to general things to look at. However, this is the earlier 26, not the 260, which he is looking at with some changes in the cockpit primarily where wheel steering was offered and the redesign of the transom along with several other things but most is the same.

However, you should hear a klunk when the center board comes up. If not, then it is a simple matter of readjusting the lines on top of the cabin deck. Otherwise if the centerboard is too low, it will hit the trailer on the leading edge when putting the boat back on the trailer or if in shallow water, it could hit the ramp coming off. Suggest readjusting the lines.

KERMIT, PLEASE ADVISE ON THIS AS YOU EXPERIENCED THE CENTERBOARD SNAGGING ON YOUR TRAILER.

I was asked on how to negotiate a price. Folks, I am not a salesman but merely one telling you how to repair or what I know on this forum other than to suggest buying parts for your Hunter sailboats as this store on the Hunter Forum or SBO is going all out to be able to supply your needs when others cannot and trust me on this one, they are doing their best to supply your needs.

Thanks, folks - I really appreciate the help. I'm super excited and hopeful that she is dry in the bilge ad the keel functions properly.

Max, Dave is right about hearing a clunk. I had no idea why I was having trouble backing off the trailer. Dave asked if I heard a clunk at the top of raising the centerboard. I had no idea what he was talking about. The clunk is the board hitting the top of the well. Dave adjusted it and I have no trouble backing off now. He might be crazy but he's still perty smart.

Took the leap and bought her today. PO seems like a very nice guy, no pressure to buy, took the time to explain everything and seemed honest.

No moisture at all in the bilge - there were cob webs in there. No mildew anywhere inside but there was plenty of crud on the outside. As mentioned, she's just been sitting at the slip all season and had accumulated a lot of grunge. She got a quick scrub today but will get the full treatment next week and every week thereafter.

Floor was solid with caulk in place - no signs of leaking. The wood finish on the floor in front of the head is worn and will need to be redone. The table top is also showing it's age - no damage per se, just worn. It'll need to be refinished.

Motor (8HP Nissan 2 cycle) ran fine, although it was a bit hard to start. It has electric start but with the 12v power down, it was manual start today. It hasn't run this year so I guess that's understandable. After we sailed and went back to motor she popped on the second pull...

Heard a definite clunk when the keel was full down but took a few tries to hear it on the up. It seemed a bit hard for the PO to pull it all the way up, and he's no wimp - I kept asking him to try again because I needed to hear a clunk on full up. After a few tries, he wanted to be certain I heard a CLUNK and gave her a hard tug! Yep. I definitely heard (and felt under foot in the cabin) a CLUNK. Haha!

The short was more of an induced problem; PO hooked one of the 2 batteries up backwards and melted the insulation off some wires and literally melted the plastic around one of the threaded battery posts. As a minimum I think one battery might be shot, and the wiring between batteries and electrical panel will probably need to be replaced. I hope the breakers in the electrical panel prevented the whole system from being smoked. I don't know much about electrical so I can't say. Guess I'll soon find out.

She sailed fine - we had very light winds so it wasn't a great day to sail, but I could see the sails, feel how she steers, learn the rigging, etc. Doyle main with full battens, 2 reef points and Doyle jib were certainly used but no rips, repairs, etc. With a good cleaning I think they'll be very serviceable.

No visible crazing or cracking around the compression post or mast plate. All seemed solid and no signs of any leakage. Really, crazing was very minimal - a little on the port cockpit bench and a small bit at the bottom of the front starboard window. But really clean gel coat and deck paint.

I wasn't able to see the trailer - the marina stores them off site. The boat has been at the same marina since 1996. PO told me the trailer can't have more than 150 miles on it. Probably will need new tires if I take her more than a few miles due to likely dry rot, but I can't say for sure. PO also said he doesn't think the mast has been stepped since 1996 - it's been stored with the mast up on the trailer at the marina every year. He said he takes the boom off each winter, though. The aft starboard shroud turnbuckle was bent but functional. Will be replaced shortly. Standing rigging seemed good, running rigging is really dirty but seemed okay.

All in all, she's a sweet boat that needs a thorough cleaning, some TLC and to be sailed. I can handle that - I'm happy as heck to be the proud owner of a fine 1996 H26!

Congrats- sounds like you found a nice boat. I'm sure you checked this, but make sure he gives you the mast raising gear- sounds like the seller has not used it in a while. There should be a 6-8 ft gin pole that fits in a hole in the mast and 2 wire bridles. And the mast crutch for the transom when its down.

Congrats on your new H26, it is very exiting to get something new like that, and all the tinkering that can be done.

2 weeks ago we bought a '93 H23.5 I have her in the back yard now and been tinkering, and messing about almost every day. Sailed her 2x now and it is awesome.
I want to make her so we can spend a week on her next year on Flathead lake in Montana.

But good luck OP have fun, at least that's what we are doing.

Caverun - Thanks for the advice - I'll look for / ask the PO about it.

Kermit and Max - thanks for the "head's up" re: swing keel.

Crazy Dave - thanks for your advice. I've been reading many of your posts - how to refinish the holly and teak floor, how to fit in a bimini, etc.

It's great to know there are so many people on this site who not only have a ton of knowledge and experience, but are so willing to share it. Looking forward to learning from y'all!
