Pre-bend

General question,

Is it possible/easy to "re-set" the pre-bend after the mast has been stepped or do I have to take the mast down? I certain that when originally stepped 6 years ago, my boat hauler, unfamiliar with a B&R as was I, just tightened things up some to prevent things from banging around and then hoisted it.

Thank you

Pre-bend is set after the mast is stepped. It is part of the tuning procedure. There should be plenty of yards in the bay that are familiar with tuning a B&R rig. If not, we've got a couple here in Mystic, notably Mystic Shipyard and Noank Village Boatyard. I would completely trust the riggers in both of those yards.

You probably have a Kenyon mast B&R rig as I have. The pre-bend is created by tightening the upper and lower diamonds- the shrouds running from the mast up to the spreader tips- both upper and lower spreaders. You probably could put in the approx 5" bend by going up the mast and tightening the uppers then coming down and tightening the lowers, but I am not sure what the effects of an in place forstay and back stay would be. I would talk to local riggers- make sure they understand a B&R rig.

I've loaded mine up so I have about 6" of prebend. It looks a bit excessive especially compared to non swept spreader masts .
I did it with the mast up and adjusted the bottle screws to give a nice easy shape.
It now sails beautifully and the rig feels really tight and positive.
