I'm a recent addition to NC, from Florida. I used to sail out of DIYC in Tampa, and am looking to get a boat to keep around Oriental (living in Raleigh).

Anyway, on my very short list of boats would be a 9.2C. I'm really looking for a mobile place at the beach, weekend sailing, and have a niece and nephew I'd like to get out.

I've raced on S2s , and always like how they were put together and laid out (if a bit tender). I really like the layout of the C model.

Anyhoo, there are a few available in the area, priced from 15k up to about 28k. My first question is whether anyone has knowledge of an '87 model at Captain Sam's boatyard? Its on the hard, and very little info in the ad. I might be out there next weekend, but I'm guessing someone here may have knowledge of the boat.

Second question has to do with prices. Compared to Florida, the prices seem so much lower, and this economy is not helping. I wonder if I should expect to see another drop in the Fall that would make waiting worthwhile.

Anyway, thanks in advance. I'm a huge believer in these types of forums, and first hand knowledge is irreplaceable.

(PS: Any advice on where to keep the boat? I'd like to be able to weekend sail to Ocracoke, and would like a nice cheap slip to rent with electricity. [Yes, the inevitable AC questions will come, but am busy reading the threads now].)

S2 9.2C Oriental
Welcome Monkey,

As a 9.2C owner living in Oriental I congratulate you on your choices of boat and location. I think the 9.2C is the ideal small cruising boat for this area.

I don't know anything about the '87 you mentioned. Check it out and have it surveyed. Your first offer should be between 1/2 to 2/3 of the asking price. I don't think there will be a major drop in anyone's asking price. Final price is usually a function of how long the boat has been up for sale.

We're fortunate enough to have a dock at our home, but there is no shortage of available slips. In town I can recommend Pecan Grove. If you want something a little more reasonable try Whortonville or Point Marina on Broad Creek.

Thank you. This is the type of local info I was hoping to get.

I'll be out there next weekend to look. I would have been out this weekend renting a Cal 24 from the Sailing School, but it seems there were three weddings in Oriental this weekend, and no room in the Inn(s). :)

Hoping there is wind next weekend.

You might expand your search area. Here in Hampton Roads (and, in the Bay area, in general) 9.2s have been pretty cheap. Here's one that looks to be a project, but might be worth a call. http://norfolk.craigslist.org/boa/3808846412.html
If, after you talk to him, you'd like me to take a look for you, I'd be happy to do that.

Hmm... price is nice, but that wiring around the engine looks scary.

I'll give the guy a call, and see whats what. At the very least, I can sell the radar, and use that to fund some of the cleanup. :)

Thank you.
