I have all but decided that a Hunter 37C will be my next boat. I currently own a Classic Charlie Morgan designed 33. I was wondering if all you knowledgeable H37C owners could dissuade me from buying one. Just kidding!! I would, however, like to know a few of the known quirks and/or sore spots that you may have come across, so that I may look for any in my search for the "right one" For instance, I've heard about the portlights leaking badly, as well as the toe rails. I've also heard rudder woes (Yikes, I re-did the entire steering system on my 33) and engine vibration issues. Please continue my list for me, if you have anything to add - I'll be watching closely, and I thak you all very much. When/if I become a proud owner - I will join your ranks and website promptly.... Fair Winds Rob Welling S/V Barefoot Girl Sarasota, FL P.S. I hope it's not bad form, but I placed this article in the regular "Ask a Hunter Owner" forum as well - I thought there might be some "outside" opinions on this as well. Cheers

C37H

We stummbled onto MYST....We had no idea what we were buying, just that my wife fell in love with her from the first....We have discovered as the yr has gone by what a nice, easy design she is....We have had realitively few problems with her, a function of good design, and a well kept boat from the previous owners.... Email me and I'll give you a list of what her last owner did maybe that will help you out... There are a bunch of good folks here that are more than helpful in answering q's and sharing, so you found the right place... 73 Ed bt

37c problems

The most common problem by far on the Hunter 37 cutter is the holding tank. It is an alunimum tank located under the shower seat, and by now will have been replaced by something else. Most people have removed the old tank by cutting it in pieces so it will fit out by the v-berth. The original seacocks were gate valves, and should be replaced by ball valves. The portlights probably are looking pretty bad, and are leaking into the deck core by now, but inexpensive replacements are available at Thriftymariner.com. I will be replacing all of mine this winter. The earliest boats had 2 cylinder Yanmars, which was a bit underpowered. Mine, a 1981 has a 3 cylinder yanmar qm30H which is noisy, vibrates a bit, but is very reliable and has enough power. The latest ones have 4 cylinder Yanmars. Overall, I am very happy with mine. It is a good, safe boat which is very easy to sail. Good Luck.

Sarasota Rob?

Where would you keep her? My daughter lives there and we visit from time to time. I've been out on the ICW but have not seen any marinas. Have you looked at Curtis Collins' H37C in Bradenton? We stopped there to see Curtis and were on his boat. And in a very nice marina. I think his boat is for sale here on HOW. I posted a reply to your question over on "Ask A Hunter Owner". And I see that you have had a couple more responses. You may also have seen the debate about sloop versus cutter. Lots of options. My boat is a shoal draft but still sails very well. I plan to help downwind next season with a larger yankee(high clew jib) and, maybe, a drifter. Hope you join the group. There were over 170 owners in the HOW directory last I checked.

Thanks for all the response

I appreciate all the response - I have decided to "search the world over" in search of the 37C that's right for me. There's actually one here in town that has some nice upgrades to it, but the rig looks pretty neglected - I think I might have a rigger give it a close look, tell me all that's wrong, and go from there. Could use some cosmetic work, but a lot of interior upgrades have already been made. Anyway... Ed - I keep my current boat at Marina Jacks, and I would continue to keep my next boat there. It's a beautiful place, right downtown Sarasota, end of Main St. There are a few other marinas around too, and if you need any names, or local knowledge if you're heading this way via boat, feel free to drop me an e-mail at rob@bswadv.com Thanks again, all Rob Welling S/V Barefoot Girl Sarasota, FL

Been to Marina Jack's, hope . . . .

the marina rate is not as expensive as the restuarant! What an idyllic spot for an H37C.
