While winterized my YSM 12-R engine today, there was an intermittent grinding noise apparently coming from the transmission, while the engine was coming up to idle speed.
The intermittent grinding noise did not occurr after the engine's rotaional/rocking motion became more stabilize once it reached idle. However, I immediately shut the engine down and restarted it.
After the second restart it occurred again while the engine rocked excessively before settling down to a smooth idle, then it disappeared again. There was no grinding noises while flushing the coolant system with 4 gallon of RV antifreeze.
This never occurred before in 12 years owning the boat and I'm speculating this maybe the cause:
At the new marina, the hoist operator positioned the lifting strap so that it extended partially onto the prop shaft by a few inches. There was some load on the prop shaft, but it didnt appear to be exessive. It is tricky to get the strap completely betwee the shaft and keel as there is little room for leeway on the S2 9.2a.
Due to the minimal clearance between the prop shaft and keel this must have occurred numerous times by hoist operators on S-2's 9.2A's. There has to be some robustness, otherwise, S-2's would have a nasty reputation among hoist operators.
I'm thinking that hoist operators may have even iadvertantly hoisted with the load entirely on the prop shaft over the years on S-2's.
Please advise if any other of my fellow owners have experienced this situation?
Also please advise if the hoist strap load on the prop shaft may have altered the alignment and affected the bearings in the transmission, or any other possible causes of this noise?
Another thought: The boat has been out of the water for over 2 weeks, and could it just be dry packing & cutlass bearings?
Thank You
Capt Tom
