My 1995 336 has two bilge compartments - the shower drains into the aft one and is emptied by the manual pump. The forward one with the electric pump holds the run off from the refrig. In the aft compartment there appears to be a drain (actually just a hole) at about 3" deep (on the forward side) but it merely allows the shower water to enter another compartment between the two bilges. Has anyone connected the two bilges so the electric pump can service both? Is there any reason not to do this? Ned Strain s/v Family Therapy h336 Chicago

On the 340...

the aft bilge does drain into the forward through that little hole so the shower is ultimately pumped over by the electric pump. From what I understand the 336 and 340 are pretty much the same, I would think your shower should drain to the main bilge somehow. What happens if you take a long shower and there's no one to manually pump?

336 bilge

My 336 has a little different set up then yours the forward bilge has a manual pump and all the drains lead into it (shower, refrig) the aft bilge has the electric pump and switch. the two are interconected by the hole as in yours. My bilges will reach a equal height (appx 3 inchs) and the electric will drain them both. I'm not sure what you mean by connecting them both as they all ready are (or should be ) by the drain hole in the divider panel. I don't know if I answered your question or confused you more but the one electric pump should drain both side of the bilge.

Show Sump

A dry bildge is a happy one. We are in the process of installing a Shower Sump. This sump will be for the shower and Cooler drains. The sump will drain directly overboard.

On my 336....

On my 336 the hole connecting the two compartments is about one inch above the bottom of the bilge. It takes very little water in the rear compartment to flood over into the forward compartment and be pumped out by the automatic (electric) pump. Seems like the way it should be. Why hand pump after a shower? For Eric: However, I am interested in a separate shower sump. How are you going to do that Eric? If I plug the lower hole, drill a higher hole (just in case), and install a pump in the rear bilge compartment, that would isolate the shower water and keep the soap out of my forward bilge compartment. That what you plan? I have been thinking about a shower sump for some time and this is the only thing that has connected-the-dots for me. Is there another option? Thanks, Rodney S/V Avanti
