Has anyone replaced the PortaPotti in a h23.5 with a pump out model or real head/holding tank? Why is the forward locker in the v-berth sealed? It appears that a 10-18 gallon holding tank could be placed in the unsealed forward locker with some top cutting. Any advice appreciated.

Stay with the self contained system...

'Cuz to replace it with a "real" toilet will mean cutting a hole in the bottom of the boat and installing a thru-hull and seacock for the flush water intake, a whole bunch of plumbing--intake hose, hose from toilet to tank, hose to deck pumpout fitting, vent line--and a toilet and tank that require ongoing maintenance...not to mention losing all that storage space to the tank. A 5-6 gal "pumpable" portapotty needs no flush water plumbing, only a pumpout line and vent...requires almost -0- maintenance...takes up no more space than your current portable version...and holds as many flushes as a 15-18 gal tank connected to a manual marine toilet. Difference in price is significant too...about $200 for everything to install the self contained system va. more than $500 for a decent quality toilet and tank, thru-hull & seacock, plus all the hoses you'd need.

Forward Locker Filled With Foam

Pumpable potipotties are too tall to use the vberth after installing the potipottie

Decisions, decisions,

Thanks again Rick, and Peggy. BTW Peggy I have had your book for a few years, very informative. I suspected the foam fill, but didn't want to tear into that if someone knew. I may have to give up that corner of the Vee, boat is now in Canada and porta-pottys are illegal.

Why put $800 into a $150 problem?

Replace the porta potty with a new one. Peggie recomends a pumpable one; that would solve a lot of the dirty work associated with porta-poties. That is if you have a pump out station available. Keep it simple.

Chuck and Rick...

Rick, if you remove the lid, the 5-6 gal portapotty may not be too tall. And removing the lid is no big deal...the bowl will be the only thing that's exposed, and it's clean. The tank is "protected" by the trap door in the bottom of the bowl. Chuck, PORTABLE portapotties are illegal in Canada, but it is legal to have one that's permanently installed, fitted for pumpout. I'm sure of this because I'm in Canada at the moment and asked before I posted.

Still Too Tall

There was like a two to three inch clearance deficit. The only solution I could come up with but was too chicken to try was to cut a hole in the floor pan for the poripottie to fit into. Looked like it would be enough clearance with the potipottie siting on the ballast tank. This was a couple of years ago so I do not remember exactly. I guess another option would be to raise the v berth up a few inches.

Rick, thats what I thought too, but I think Peggy is talking about removing the top half of the portapotty. That would leave clearance for the vee berth. Thanks both of you.
