After a two day cruise I discovered a large amount of oil in my bilge. I cleaned it out and it was back the next day. When I called a mechanic he was too busy to diagnose it in person but stated that the oil pans tend to rust out on Universal 24's in Catalina 30's (mine is a 1988 version). Does anyone have any experience in this area. I was also told the engine has to be lifted out of the boat to replace the pan, is this accurate or can a repair be done in a less time consuming way.

On my 1989 Catalina 30 with a m25xp I found the bolt that holds the oil drain hose to the pan had become loose and started leaking. I was able to get in there with a very small socket wrench (about 3 inches long) from the bilge and tighten it. Solved the leak.

oil pan leak

I recently expienced an oil pan leak on my C-30. The correct solution is to remove tank, requires engine removal, repair and replace. Cause is varied- age, corrosion due to infrequent oil changes, and/or water entering oil system.

But Wait

I had the same problem on my M25XP Catalina 30. I thought it was the rusty pan or oil pan gasket too. It was not. I thought it was the Suck out hose and connection banjo bolt tightness. It was not. The inside of the rubber hose connection from the exhaust elbow to the water lift muffler was constricted to a narrow orifice. the outside of the hose seemed fine. This situation created packpressure in the oil sump. The oil had been pumped out the dipstick tube.
So check the entire exhaust for restrictions and the breather on the rocker cover. Troubleshoot by taping some bandage gauze around the dipstick tube.
