Possible new owner with THANKS, and a few more questions

I first wanted to say thanks to all the responders !!, this has been
much better than
two other boat groups i was considering, where i asked the same
questions.. At this
point there is at least a 90% chance i'm going to go for this 1972
Vega.

What is the deck core material, and is this known to be a potential
problem area or not ?

the above vessel still has the original Volvo MD6/combi., if anyone
has repowered
with a newer engine, i'd be interested in hearing their choices, and
installation issues.

If any one in the group sails off shore, i'd be interested in their
choice of SSB radio.
and life raft.

thanks again for all the input., if i do become the owner of this
boat, i'll be here
on a regular basis.

I have owned a Vega (for the past two and a half years) that was
built in 1969 and has spent her life on the US/Canada Eastern
Seaboard. I have yet to see any problems with blistering in the
gelcoat. Now dings and a dulling of the gelcoat is another (and
expected) matter...

I do know from previous owners that the variable pitch propeller was
a problem with her. Her original engine and prop were replaced with a
13 hp Westerbeke diesel with a fixed pitch two bladed prop. I have
found this auxillary to be a very reliable system that will drive the
vessel at a speed between 5 to 6 knots.

Hi

Many engines used for re-powering. Most popular in the Uk is the Beta BZ482 -
13.5HP. Now been installed in over eighty Vegas worldwide and a simple
installation. Fits straight onto the original bearers of the Vega you are
thinking of buying. Complete engine and installtion kit comes in at around
$5000 which includes delivery, shaft, prop, control cables, lever,
installation
notes and photos.

RegardsSteve birch (steve@...) Just back fro five days sailing in the
Western Isles (Scotland) - what a fantastic place to sail. We had a Vega rally
and had a great time.
