I just bought a 1990 Beneteau 35s5 and looking to the rating certificates, the value of calculated Positive Stability is betwen 97 to 103 degrees, whish I consider extremely low and even unsafe for ofshore sailing. My boat has a short winged keel and I wonder if the figures are the same for boats with diferent kind of keels. I would appreciate comments on this since I am thinking of changing the keel although not only for stability but for better race performance too. Thanks a lot. Alberto Sabbatino

A little difficult to believe you have the correct value, was it recorded properly? The attached website shows what acceptable values are for offshore. It also shows how to calculate value, the keels consideration in the formula seems limited to the amount of weight. Typically the deeper keels weigh less, and would lower the value.
