I am doing a fair bit of club racing but I feel that I am at a disadvantage with the published Portsmouth (sp??) rating of the 260. The base rating is 91 and in stronger wind it goes to 89.xx. Almost all the other boats in our club have ratings between 95 and 97 except for one with 84.xx. This past weekend one of the participants was a Beneteau First 21.0 with a rating of 97. There was no way I could stay up with that boat. Is the 260 really that fast, or am I that bad a sailer?

Don't understand ratings...

Calvin, I don't understand your ratings. They cannot be PHRF, so it must be for your club. The 2002 PHRF book has only one rating for a 260, which is 218 (same for 2001). A little more info might help... Steve

Portsmouth rating sort explanation

The Portsmouth handicap rating is based on upon time measured in minutes. A boat with a Portsmouth rating of 85 will sail in 85 minutes what a boat with a 90 will sail in 90 minutes. The lower the number the faster the boat. With this rating system you start the boats at different times, the spread being the difference in their rating. If they all sail to their handicap all the boats are finishing at the same time, you dont have to record times. Makes life for the race committee real easy. Course this system was designed in England so it probably wont be popular in the US. ; )

Why we use Portsmouth

We all start at the same time and at the end of the race the handicap is applied. The race committee tells me we use this system because it is based upon time whereas PHRF is based on distance. We lay our courses out differently each race and do not have the capability to measure the length accurately enough to use PHRF or so they tell me.

Try this web site for an explanation of Portsmouth

Take a look at this web site and you will see the rating US Sailing gives your boat. You will see ratings for your boat as well as just about anything else that you'll encounter on the race couse. They also do a fine job of explaining how and why they handicap this way. http://www.ussailing.org/portsmouth/tables2002.htm
