Ports on a Hunter Legend 37, 1988

I am considering the purchase of a Hunter Legend 37, 1988. I read in the archive and verified on the boat the design of the ports, which seem to catch water and dump the water into the cabin when they are opened. The current owner said that there was a lip that can be installed above the port to shed water. Has anyone come up with a good solution to minimize the water that is collected in the port?

Also, does anyone know the manufactuer of the ports and hatches on the H37? There are some broken latches on a copule of ports and a latch missing from a hatch.

Hatches

All hatches tend to dump water into the boat. I've owned a 37' and it was never a big problem. Just close the hatches when going to windward.
The hatches where made by lenmar if memory serves me. They have replacement parts available on the web.

The ports on my 1988 H35 are from Beckson, so I would be very surprised if the 88 H37 is any different. See www.beckson.com Beckson make both Self Drain and Raindrain versions of these ports to deal with accumulated water. Self Drains are supposed to be good for installing at a 15 degree angle and Rain Drains at up to 45 degrees. Mine are Rain Drains but they still collect a little water so I suppose that the installation angle must be greater than 45 degree if Beckson's design claims are correct.

I have never heard anything about a lip above the port.

Ports

Neil,
I think that you're right; I think that they are Beckson. Went to their site and it looks like I can find what I need. Thanks for your help.

About that "Lip above the port" question. They might have been referring to those "awnings" that fit on top of the port. A friend has them on his H28.5. They are sized to fit the spigot and don't do very much to keep out water. They do provide some shade from the noon sun. http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=160669F

OEM Hatches were made by Bomar

Unfortunately, the plant that made the original hatches had a fire and the jigs were destroyed.

The new hatches that replaced the old model have the same cutout dimensions except that the corner radius is a tad larger but not enough so that the trim doesn't cover the void. What this means is one will have to fill in the void in the corners.

Re: OEM Hatches were made by Bomar

I'm pretty sure that I bought (June '09) the boat originally referenced; the inventory of missing latches sounds dead on.

I recently bought what I thought were replacement parts from Pompanette (Gray/Bomar). While the cutouts match, they're angled totally different and have no rain drain, trim rings are wrong, etc. So I will head toward Beckson and get these all refreshed. I have two questions though:

1. What's your sealant of preference for the edges of these?

2. For resale value, is re-design a bad idea? That is, "don't cut bigger holes and put in fancy portlights because your potential problems are..."

beckson and draining

ports on my H35 are Beckson. easy to replace, both obtaining them from Pompanette and installing them. regarding water, i just accept the fact that water will accumulate on the outside and, after the rain's stopped, take my wastebin around underneath each port, open from the inside, then drain. simple. just be sure to clean the gaskets regularly and lube with light coat of vaseline.

on the 85 h37 near me it is bomar/pompanette------- the acrylic portligts were grey industries........on my '85 h40 they are also Bomar/Pompanette/grey portlights with bowmar hatches. I havent tried to replace the acrylic in the hatches. yet. I have replaced some of the darker acrylic portlights with the new grey industries lenses, and I have successfully repaired the tinted portlights.

What I have done is attack the crazing.... I while I am close to having a finsished method for removing solar crazing from the acrylic hatches...... I cant sell the service yet.

what seems to work is to remove the portlight lense and use a light wash of a particular solvent on the outside of the portlight. the solvent has to penetrate to the depth of the crazing. quickly rinse with clean water hot air dry and polish with flitz , and the lenses come back to almost new condition.

for much less than the asking price of the new lenses.

Hi all. I came across an interesting after market part that helps keep water out of the ports on boats. Checkout the website www.seaworthygoods.com They have molded awnings that keep water from accumulating. I found my oval windows would leak it rainwater was left to stand. These helped solve the problem. Cheers.
