Looking at a portager 22 (identical to the mac 22/venture 2-22 rebranded maybe) And while it looks like a nice little boat, I'm wondering if someone can tell me if it would be suitable for coastal sailing and gunkholing along lake michigan? Thanks in advance Ken.

Totally fine for Lake Michigan. You will probably be ok until waves exceed four, or maybe six feet, depending on what you consider fun.

If it's like my 1971 22' Venture it is fully capable of this use. I have mine set-up for singlehanding and have a variety of headsails including, a 150 genoa, 120 jib, 75 jib, storm jib and a gennaker, all with downhauls. My main has two reef points also. I have taken it offshore to Catalina and am going to Santa Cruze Island in Aughst. All of these are more than 20 miles offshore. The boat is tender so be sure to reef, drop the headsail or replace the headsail with a smaller one when the wind pipes-up. Good luck, Duane "Novelman"

thanks!

Thanks guys! Instincts told me it would work out allright, I mean it looked and 'felt' like a sailboat, and even smelled like a sailboat that's spent too long on the hard. Most people I've talked to seemed to think that anything under 28ft was meant for 'tame' inland areas. Have a bigger boat, and a little 10ft O'day sprite, but the big boats on the hard for a while yet, and the sprite is too small for more than one adult to sail in comfortably, so no-one likes to go out with me in it! This one looks large enough for two or more, and still small enough to launch alone if I want. I'll pick it up in the afternoon. Thanks again Ken.

she's home

was pleasantly surprised, Had about had a few inches of water in the bilge, and crud everywhere. Pumped her out, pulled out everything that was inside, then climbed in with a water hose and washed everything down, ended up looking perfectly fine with just a good hosing, doesn't even have a musty smell in her. Started digging through all the cubbys, and found a sail cover, and a canvas cover for the pop-top, mildewed but no marks or tears. Main, jib, and genoa all look like new but have an orangy damp feeling stain on them, also a jib I'm not familiar with it's fully battened has a stiff wire leech, with a foot that's just barely as long as the J. Haven't rigged the boat yet so I'm hoping I'll figure it out. (an old inventory sheet says 'storm jib' but looks big to be a storm) Came with a 10hp chrysler sailor outboard, and after this afternoons work I think she's ready for the water. $500 on the trailer and I'm happy, hopefully I'll get some photos up soon. Starting to sound like a gloat, so I'll sign out now! Thanks again Ken.

sorry, forgot the pics

been sailing it a while and finally got around to pics. were planning to out this weekend, but wife has to work, and she'd get ticked if I went without her. So I decided to clean the garage instead. (some of the pics will show why!)

Ken.
