Does anyone have any recommendations for portable sound that I can use with an iPod? I am looking for a battery powered boombox or iPod speakers that have good sound. BTW-Is there a simple way to hook up a boombox to a DC 12v battery?

Ipod

I have my Ipod plugged into a Bose Wave radio that is portable with D batteries although I havent used it portable yet, just shore power. The Bose Wave radio has big bass sound, and actually came with an assortment of aux. cables. Bose also sells speakers that are pretty small that have their own amplifiers The ipod will play directly thru these and you can separate them about 6' which is much better than the contained setup that is usually marketed with Ipod.. I use all of this strictly in my cabin and big vberth. They are not built for outdoors. However I am told Bose makes outdoor speakers.

I play mine thru my FM stereo

Bought the attachment that plays thru FM 87.9. Works great. As far as power, get the 12v adapter if you need to.

ditto on the Bose i-pod amp

A guy at work got one, its great, makes the Ipod sound like a giant stereo system.

Altec inMotion system

While I agree that the Bose systems will probably provide the best sound, the Altec inMotion system is compact, battery powered or 110 powered, and costs about $110.00 at Sam's Club. I bought one and they give pretty good sound to fill a room or a cabin on a boat.

Tune Your Rig

Cate, I networked my MP3 Player to my boat's stereo via the Aux. input plug on the boat's unit. There are other ways to do it that include the cassette adapter route or even the FM receiver way. I wrote an article that I tried to get published in various sailing mags....Cruising World came close to publishing me but it didn't make to final cut. Click on the link and read it off my website (my online cruising guide)- enjoy and let me know what you think? (I won't quite my day-job). Good Luck! Rob

iPod On Board

I don't have an onboard stereo system on my O'Day 20. While I would love the Bose Soundock for the iPod (I listened to it in a store and it is fantastic!) I don't have an AC inverter. So it looks like a portable battery system for me. The Altec Lansing inMotion3 iPod speakers look promising, but I am not sure they can punch out the power when I'm out sailing. (music will be coming from inside cabin while under sail) I'll probably be getting the Sony CFD-G500 boom box ($100) because it has a mini-plug input. BIG sound too. I'm looking to power it with a portable battery unit that has a cigarette receptacle. (50 hours and rechargable-$50) Of course all of this gear will have to be tied down in the cabin when I get out there to sail...bungie cords and hook eyes await. (note hook eyes will not be going into the hull, but into a wooden cabin wall.)

iPOD

Pick up an iPOD. Add a wireless antenna holder. Then add a base tuner/charger unit. Then all you have to do is down music into the iPOD and play it throgh your boat's FM radio.
