I've recently acquired a Honda 2000 portable generator and would like to stow it in the aft lazerette when not being used. However I'm hesitant to do so due to lack of ventilation in this compartment. Can anyone suggest a suitable vent system for this area? Thanks.

I have been thinking for some time about the same topic - and the Honda 2000. I still haven't done it but I have seriously been thinking about building a small, enclosed, and centered extension area on the transom. I would build it out of fiberglass with a venting and gas tank system that would be separated from the interior of the main area of the boat by the transom. This would keep fumes out, hopefully sound proofing the area somewhat would keep an already quiet Honda even quieter.Since I store already gas fuel for my dingy, I 'm not really concerned by gas on board. What do you think?

Generator Stowage
John, That sounds ok for storage but I don't think you'd want to run it there due to heat and exhaust fumes plus CO buildup. In looking at the lazarette today I believe that I could set up a vent system composed of a 3 to 4 inch dia. vent duct going from the bottom of the lazarette to a solar powered exhast vent which would be located on the aft combing about 12" from fresh water filler cap. I plan to operate the generator in the bow area on top of the anchor stowage cover.

Difficult to isolate from cabin.
Dave: I think you will find that a generator is going to be difficult to isolate from the interior. Even if you build some type of a box, you still have taken a perfectly safe diesel vessel and turned it into a not so safe vessel with all those gasoline fumes. One option may be to use some type of a day/nite solar vent at the bottom of the box to exhaust the gasoline fumes. The other option would be a bilge blower. I would think about other possible options before using one of these onboard. If you had a seperate storage area like some of the new boats it would be feasible. I just don't think that this is the BEST idea.

Honda 2000
We run a Honda 2000 on our 1983 27 Cherubini. It fits perfectly in the port deck by the electrical inlet. It exausts forward where the fumes and heat are blown away by the brezze or dispate in the air. For storage it sits in the sole of the cabin under the folding table. I would not run it under the deck because of the danger of carbon monoxide.
