Hello. I own a 28 ft O'Day, and have been sailing a number of years. My past boat was a Herreshoff America, that would not point very well. Now back to the O'Day. It seems she will point well on a port tack, but when I come about to starboard, she will just transverse where we just came from? Am I missing something? All the cars, Jib sheets and main are set the same. I am a casual sailor, I know how to get from point A to point B. We have no wish to race, just would like to improve our travel on the bay. Thanks..Also would like to paint the decks with the original buff color. Anyone know the name of the paint.

A few questions first:

Is the mast centered and the shroud tension the same on both sides?

The genoa cars and mainsheet traveller in identical positions on both tacks ?

Tension on the sheets and main the same on both tacks?

What direction is the current running in relation to the wind direction? Currents around Jamestown are really strong and will effect the boat a lot more than the wind. Let's say on one tack you are at 0 degrees to the current and pointing about 45 degrees into the wind. When you come about and point 45 degrees the other way you will be at 90 degrees to the current and the boat will be slipping sideways drastically as the current pushes on the keel and hull.

You should also consider waves. On different tacks you will be attacking waves at different angles and this sometimes affects pointing from one tack to the other, but the first thing I would look at is the mast. Make sure it is plumb and properly tuned.
