Port/Starboard at the mark

I'm not a racer. However, I really enjoy watching the rock stars on OLN every night -- provided the weather is really, really nice, and the breeze is moderate, and the boats aren't broken, etc. Last night, Prada and Alinghi were converging on the windward mark, Alinghi was on the starboard layline, and Prada was on the port layline. If you've not been following this regatta, the boats leave all marks to starboard. Right at the mark, Alinghi sticks its nose in front of Prada, and the helmsman spins the wheel hard to go around the mark just ahead of Prada. It was so close that Prada had to give way a bit. The announcer got all excited, "there will probably be a protest!" There wasn't. I don't understand. I realize there are a bunch of special rules about right of way at marks, but this seemed to me to be a simple port-starboard situation. Alinghi was on starboard tack, crossed port-tacker Prada legally and then made the turn. Did anyone else understand the announcer's point-of-view? Paul sv Escape Artist h336

Sounds like Prada did the right thing. If Prada put her nose inside(between the mark and Alinghi) Alinghi would not have to give her room and Prada would have been protested.... Rule #'s 13, 18.3 and appendix C 2.6

I Agree!

I saw that rounding myself and agree with the announcers, Prada should have protested as she was forced to change course to avoid collision and she did have right of way. Very surprised there was no protest. Maybe they are kicking themselves today!
