I noticed in some old promotional material on my Oday 23 that there was available an extension or something that converted the port settee into a double bed. Does anyone have any pictures, drawings, or other information about this feature ? It sure would be a nice addition to the boat.

Double berth, my @#$%

The port settee on my '79 O'Day 23 does indeed expand into a "double" berth; double in the sense that it is bigger than the starbord settee. This was a standard feature on this model O'Day (late '70's, non-pop top). I suspect that if you have a 23 that is the same vintage, your settee expands as well. The bottom of the settee simply pulls out like a drawer. Grab the lip that holds the cushion, and give it a try. Look for the tell tale support block on the bulkhead underneath the fold up table that the extension rests upon when expanded. Of course, you need the cushion that fits onto the extended platform too.

Never seen that

Mike, I don't recall seeing such a thing on mine-it is a 1981 vintage boat.

Double Berth information

Tim, I agree with Mike - it does pull out but a "double berth"! I have recently acquried an O'Day 23 and it has this feature .... In discussing the interior with another O'Day 23 owner we discussed this and I have some pictures to show the detail. Send me your e-mail and I will send you the photos. My e-mail is jaforster@yahoo.com Cheers. James

Tim, I learn something new

every day. When I decided I wanted to buy an O'Day 23, I looked at about five boats before I found the one I bought. One was an early seventies pop top, and the others were all late seventies non-pop tops. The pop-top was a completely different boat below and above decks (although the hull shape looked identical to the newer boats), but the newer non pops were all pretty much the same. The color of the cabin liners differed, the sink/head arrangements varied slightly, some had deck anchor lockers and some didn't, some had painted spars, some plain anodized, but they all had a pull out double berth for the port sette. Given the variations I saw, I guess its not surprising that O'Day (or Bangor Punta or whoever) decided to forgo that feature on some boats. Incidentally, my boat came with some promotional brochures for the O'Day line of trailerable cruisers, and it indicates that the double berth was standard at the time.

Dan, e-mail me for pics

Dan, just saw your posting. My boat came with the slide out extension. I do have some pictures which I can send you if you send me your e-mail address. Not sure how you would proceed if the boat did not come this way - although I do not think it would be too difficult to rig something similar. Write to me at jaforster@yahoo.com
