Port light seals

I have a couple of leaks in the cabin windows of my Vega #3326 and I
think that I have located a source for a replacement seal in Canada.
However, I do not have the thickness dimensions of either the
deckhouse material or the glass. Does anyone know what they are? It is
too wintery here in Canada right now to remove a window and measure.

Does anyone have experience of locating a seal that does fit? I ask
because the potential supplier only has lots that would supply the
needs of several Vegas

Many thanks in advance for any information.

Hi Clint,
I'm doing a similar project, adding two small forward-facing ports to
the cabin top. I'll pass along what I have found out:

Drilling a small hole in the cabin (forward face) reaveals a
thickness of 1/4". The existing glass is 4mm (from the VAGB site).

I found rubber channel and "chrome" lock strip at a place called
Restoraion Specialties in Winber PA.
They were very helpful on the phone and shipped my order right away.
Check out page 39 in their on-line catalog. About 2/3 of the way down
is the channel AS1456 and lock strip 713080 that I'm using.

I found the tool to put in the lock strip at Amazon.com. There were
two different sizes available and I bought the larger one. But on
experimenting with some scraps I discover I may have bought the wrong
one:
and the smaller one:

I see VAGB offers a complete kit, including tool. It might be worth
investigating as you can be sure all the pieces are the correct size.

I, however, enjoy re-inventing the wheel ;-)
I haven't cut any holes in the boat yet .... I may chicken out.

The thickness of the fibreglass varies tremendously. Glass is 4mm I believe.

Hi Clint,
If you want to coordinate a group purchase (or just sell some if you have to buy extra), I'll take enough to do my two...

Hello Steve,
I am also looking to replace the port seals on Vega 1870. Do you
know what kind of car this rubber was used on or do you have a part
number that could be used in finding this material? There are places
here that sell materials to refurbish antique cars who might be able
to supply the materials if we could tell them what it was mostly used
on. Also a local glass shop said they would order the material if I
could give them part number information.

Thanks in advance,
Jim,

Addendum to this old post of mine:
I have since discovered, thanks to Clint, the rubber seals on the
Vega are not the ones I listed in the message below. The Vega glass
on Clint's boat actually overlaps the hole in the cabin trunk, and
the seal used is more like the one pictured at

I would be interested to hear from other Vega owners what they have
discovered when removing the old rubber. Do different Series use
different methods?

My apologies for misleading the list with incorrect info!
