While they are wrting " sailing for dummies", I have another question, would be very grateful for help:
the frame on one of the port holes in my '82 H33 is cracked (onto which the lense goes): can I remove from outside, by unscrewing it?
Also, where do I buy new gaskets?
I have a few leaks, I suppose I must re-bed chain plates. But the portholes, old as they are, are gaskets available?

Pompanette is where you want to be: http://www.pompanette.com/pompweb.n...0b6a37db4eafbf05852567c400837f28?OpenDocument . You can replace your Gray portlight(s) in total or in parts.

You write that the "frame" is cracked "onto which the lense goes". But the lexan(lense) is on the hinged part that swings in. So I gather you mean the part that protrudes through the cabin. The part that gets broken when stepped on along the cabin sides. That part of a portlight is called the "spigot". If that is the what you mean then yes, you can unscrew from the inside and pull it in.

But it is with great difficulty. You first have to get the outside frame off. Some outside frames were screwed on while some were held on with the caulking. Mine came off in pieces. There are photos of this project in many of the Hunter mods above. Here is one: http://hunter.sailboatowners.com/in...&cat_id=38&aid=7206&page=article&mn=37-cutter . There are at least two more photo projects under H37C and one in the H33 mods forum. You can learn a lot about your boat if you check the projects under "Boat Info" then "Owner Modifications".

Daer Mr. Schenck
Very informative material, but thanks for directing me on to the "Owner Modifications" section
I did not see it in there, there must be a library section you search info; I entered "port holes", nothing came up
I will save what I have, though; I am not very good at computers, but my desire to restore this boat trancends all other weaknesses: I paid $1000 for this boat with the sole purpose of getting the Yanmar, but could not scuttle it for it's heart, so I sold the other boat I had (my first) and kept the Hunter
I was fortunate to have found a similar boat at a salvage yard, and have for the last 10 Fridays removed all I can.
Now I have a complete boat which I am assembling
Thanks again, and all of you good people assisting an idiot in a worthwhile mission
