I recently bought an '86 222 and have a lot of problems with the pop up rudder system. The downhaul easily goes off track and jams in the hinge. Anyone fixed this? Thanks

Pop Up Rudder

I think the pop up rudder design is a good concept and we use it in shallow water, but the reality of the pop-up and the lack of rudder control when it does float are flawed. My downhaul(rudder tension line) has jammed in the rudder checks making it a pain to unjam. What seems to work for me is to feed the line thru a tiller tamer attached to the tiller and keep enough pressure on that line so the rudder won't pop up unexpectedly. a few quick loosening turns on the tiller tammer and the rudder will pop up when approaching shallow water.....on a mooring or slip in deep enough water you can use a more secure tie off for that line, as the clam cleat supplied with the boat on the tiller doesn't hold the rudder tension line securely...

222 Rudder

Have the same problem with my 222. I rarely pull the rudder up. My problem is more how to get it back down when the line jams, so I figure I'm okay for most emergency groundings.

Getting Back Down

To get that pop up rudder back down Stand on swim ladder and use one foot to push rudder down while pulling in rudder tension line....

How to get the rudder up?

Just bought my '84 222 last week. My problem is that I can't get the rudder up. The marina channel I use is 3'2" deep right now. I ran aground in it yesterday because of the rudder. Have tried everything to get it to "pop up", but no luck. Is there something (a bolt?) that I should loosen? The line seems to be free... Thanks!
