Have a custom dodger built instead of the poptop. Beside the practicle side they look very nautical. Pro:Cover the compagionway, winchs, etckeep spray out of the cockpitVentilation in the rainHead roomLooksCon:May complicate running fowardOne more thing to clean and maintainCost
I have a pop-top on my 1998 h240 and I love it. It is great for those rainy nights with all the kids in the cabin. More headroom, allows for protection from the elements. Mine is easy to set-up and take down. It does not look the greatest, but it is functional.
I have a 25.5 which is a poptop model. It offers massive ventilation. If you ever get water bellow(which you certainly will) your boat will dry out lickidysplit. It is also oh so nice on those hot summer nights. The only disadvantage that I have is that I don't have a tent for the poptop.
I used to have a Catalina 25 with a pop top. It also had a dodger that allowed to top to rise and also put the tent over the pop top. The tent afforded protection, standing room and created a one foot shelf all around to store duffels, towels, etc. Being avble to store stuff on the "shelf" opened up more space below for sitting, sleeping, etc. The dodger offerred covered protection for the tent entrance and a place to sit (protected) when in the cockpit.
Had a pop top on a 25 Catalina. Loved it. But I did have the tent, too, which is really necessary for bugs, light showers, damp dew, etc. But when it is hot, it is absolutely great.
Really appreciate the pop top feedback. I'd be considering two different boats, think I'll go for the pop top. We'll be sailing on the Cheasapeake Bay with family of four, so head room and ventilation sway the debate. thanks.
