Pop Top Flops

I purchased an '88 C-22 Wing Keel from the original owner. She let friends do the sailing and doesn't know much about the boat so couldn't answer my pop top question. The pop top swings up against the mast but there is nothing to hold it there. Owner's manual says slide the lock into the mast but there is no sliding lock nor does there appear to be anything missing. Can't find a part in the Catalina Direct catalog. How does the pop top stay up? Bob H. (all bent over in the cabin) Scituate

part missing

There is a little piece that hooks over (under?) the edge of the poptop. It rides in the mast slot and locks with a thumb nut. I am pretty sure I saw it in the CD catalog. I'll try to remember to look it up tonight and pass the page number and part number on to you.

Yes, there's specifically a part

as Pete suggests. Why not just call Catalina Direct and tell them what you are looking for and order it...they'll know immediately what you want. Brad

Picture

I saw the locking nut in the catalog but didn't see the whole part. It comes with the boat and I don't see how it would come out. Is it possibly just at the bottom of the mast and you didn't recognise it? Just a thought. A picture can be found at: http://www.spiritone.com/~mack/c22/techtips/cabin/poptoplock.jpg I am pretty sure that CD would have it even though I didn't see it in the catalog.

Speaking of pop tops...

Yes, the part is available from Catalina direct. It's inexpensive also, works well. I tried my pop top canvas cover the other day (have had for 3 years, never tried it). The thing must have shrunk at some point. It was short of the snaps on the sides and back. Man, I was frustrated as we were sleeping on the boat that night and was expecting more head room. Thinking of two things. One, add more material at bottom to make fit. Or make a new one out of lighter fabric that will be easier to handle and store...like tent dacron or something...still thinking. And something tells me not even bother with it. Suggestions?

Thanks

Thanks everyone. I looked at the picture link, definitely don't have one of those. From your responses that it resides on the mast, not on the poptop, I found the sliding lock in the catalog under rigging. Thanks again for your help. Bob H. (soon to be upright in the cabin) Scituate, MA

Seaking of pop tops (reply)

Kenn, I have seen snap extentions that give you about an inch more to work with. Its just a 1" strap with a snap on each end - easy to make, you can find the snaps and tool at a hardware store.

Pop top safety

Be very careful about the pop top. They can fall and cause injury. Even when you get the locking device, I suggest securing the top with a small piece of rope around the mast. Better safe than sorry!
