I'm planning on installing a new head tank under the v-berth. The Ronco B223 is a good choice, but I'm considering having a better fitting & larger tank custom made out of 1/8" - 1/4" polycarbonate. Has anyone ever used this material for a head tank?? The local plastic shop is able to weld pieces together using a methylene choride solvent. I've already had them make some 6V golf cart battery boxes (down in the bilge) which turned out quite perfect. Any advice on polycarbonate would be appreciated.

Question for Peggy.

The Head Mistress will no doubt have the answer. I do think that 1/8" is inadequate for the job. I chose a 22 gallon Ronco for the same location. A main reason was their thickness. Peggy told me what it was but I forget. More than the other mfgs. anyway. B223 looks like a good choice if you don't need that space for anything else. Thirty-two gallons is a pretty large tank.

Way too thin

Battery boxes don't have liquid in 'em that weighs 8.333 lbs/gal pushing against the tank walls. 1/8" walls, even sheet metal, will bulge and distort and could split a seam. Go with the Ronco tank. Even their smallest tanks have walls close to 3/8" thick, which can support the weight of the contents.

welded poly tank

Thanks for the link. Any idea if welded polypropylene is any better than the standard molded polypropylene tanks?

Molded tanks are not polypropylene...

They're polethylene. Welded tank makers prefer PP over PE because PP is easier to weld. Both are equally good tank material.
