Peggy, do you have any experience of or thoughts on Poly X hose which is advertised with a "lifetime warranty against odor permeation?" The holding tank on my boat is situated above the head; changing the layout would be difficult at best, so I want to instal hose with the least chance of permeation. I have successfully tackled the stinky head problem on our previous boats, but neither had the holding tank mounted so high relative to the head.

Poly X is the new Shields hose that has a $15/ft price tag...right?

A "lifetime warranty" SOUNDS good, but only covers the hose...not the labor to replace, which is the worst part of the DIY job and most expensive if you pay someone else.

But even if labor were covered, a warranty is only words, it's not a proven track record...and while Trident 101/102 has only a 5 year warranty, there's never been a single reported odor permeation failure in the 15+ years it's been available.and it sells for under $8/ft.

PolyX may indeed BE totally odor impermeable forever...but Trident 101/102 also seems to be...so I can't see paying 2-3x more just for words.

Thanks Peggy, your reply makes sense to me. The labour is indeed the worst part of the job, one that I am not looking forward to.

Maybe there is a market

Maybe flexible stainless steel hoses and sanitary fittings, like we use in the chemical manufacturing, should be considered! It would never smell again. :D

At least not for the 2-5 years it would take for urine to eat the first holes in it.

You've made the same mistake that many others make--assuming that a material that's impervious to harsh acids and other chemicals can resist anything.Kadey-Krogen (trawler builder) made the same mistake...they put stainless pickup tubes in their holding tanks, and the fittings in steel inspection plates. After a few years, owners in droves started going nuts trying to figure out why they could only pump out anything from a few gallons to nothing...they were looking for a blockage--clogs, sludge buildup.... Till someone noticed that his hose fittings were badly corroded and removed the inspection plate to replace it and found that the pickup tube was GONE! Eaten through and fallen off. All of 'em have failed or are failing. Owners are removing and replacing with PVC.
