Does anyone know how to remove this stuff? The previous owner of my boat used Poli glow and now it's all faded and gray looking.

Poliglow removal

Sounds like someone may have thrown some Poliglow on the hull without first using the Poliprep product to remove the wax. The previous wax is likely trapped under the Poliglow finish and has begun to discolor. You should be able to remove both the Poliglow as well as the previous wax causing the discoloration by using the Poliprep. Last time I ordered it I got it at www.paradigm-products.com. Hope that helps...

PoliPrep

I am using PoliGlow because the previous owner did so. I used poliprep to remove most of the previous application and the recoated with poliglow. I found that the previous application lasted 3 years without any additional work (in the upper mid-west). And recoating was really quite easy. Anyway from the smell I would guess that the primary ingredient in poliprep which is removing the poliglow and other waxes is ammonia. I believe they even give a warning not to get ammonia on the finished surface. So a diluted solution of ammonia may work but poliprep also removed various organic stains quite well. That's my two cents.

Poli-Prep Contents..........

My bottle of Poli-Prep says: 2-Butoxyethanol, tea, mea, benzyl alcohol. Looks to me like thickened or concentrated alcohol. It also says that "Poli-Prep will remove bottom paint if allowed to come in contact."

You need a stripper!!

Poliprep will be a "butyl" solvent to remove wax etc. The greying is NOT due to trapped wax, since an acrylic coating will not stick if there is any wax underneath. What you are seeing is what happends to all acrylic clear coats eventually (how soon, depending upon amount sunlight, heat, amount of formulated UV blocker etc). That is what you see on car hoods after about 3 years. Best way to strip is using an ammonia based stripper (commercial) designed for acrylic floor coating removal. This is available at big stores like Home Depot. If you are going to redo the acrylic surface, then use the butyl cleaner and really well scuff. You can also use IG cleaners underneath an acrylic, although not directly recommended. You cannot use an acrylic over our sealants as they definitely will not stick- you would have to remove with a xylol-based wax remover.

sorry, I couldn't help myself. Let us know how it turns out. I have to do some similar work, but waiting until fall, I hope.
