Hi Just wondering for those of you who have set up a down haul for your spin pole if you could pass on some photos or at least give me some ideas for different ways to run this. My boat came with a spin and pole but no real down haul set up. The few times I have flown the kite I have rigged up to the toe rail, but it was a bit of a gong show. Any suggestions.... Looking for H31 setup specifically Dave

..or foreguy is needed to keep the pole from skying in a good puff. If you end for end your pole you will need a bridle for the foreguy. I advise running the foreguy from a snap shackle on the ring of the bridle to a turning block at the base of the mast. The advantage of this is when the pole is trimmed and eased the foreguy will not need adjustment. On larger boats the foreguy is lead forward to the foredeck where increased purchase is needed. On my 35.5 we use a 2:1 purchase and lead the foreguy to the mast base and then back to the cockpit to a stopper.

Exactly my point about moving the block back to the base of the mast. There you don't have to worry about easing the guy when the pole is trimmed. I race on a Soverel 33 and the foreguy on her is setup as in your picture. Several times each race someone forgets to release the foreguy so the pole can't be trimmed until it is which cost time and boat speed. I find it a pain in the ass, much prefer my alternative.

Down haul (part deux)

Alan, I'm assuming the mast-block system works 'cause it establishes a constant radius/arc for the down-haul to track through when trimmed or eased. Right? I like the concept, but man! is there already a lot going on at the base of my mast! Your idea would permit the forward hatch to be opened if necessary. As currently configured, it's trapped beneath the feed to the aft bulls-eye. Plenty of time to cipher on this, 'cause our season is just about over. Bit of a chill in the air this AM and the harbor was pretty quiet this week. Oh well, happens every year... Thanks for your input. Take care.

I have 5 halyards, pole lift, and cunningham at the mast base but they are all mounted on the sides. The block for the pole foreguy is mounted all by it's lonesome on the front facing edge. Hopefully you don't have any more spaghetti than that up there.

Perhaps macaroni, 'cause there's only 3 halyards and everything else you listed. On the aft side there's the vang attachment. Only the spin halyard is external, jibs are internal until they exit at the base of the mast. On second thought, this may be a lasagna set-up! 'Nuff said, headed to the harbor: sunny, 46+ degrees, 8+ knots & 1-2 footers. Should be a good day...
