I have a 1986 28.5 Hunter with a 150 genoa. Does anyone have or know where to go to get polar performance diagrams for this boat? Thanks in advance. Mike msosborn@msn.com

What the Hey?

Polar Performance Diagrams!? That's a new one by me. Maybe I'm just showing my ignorance -- but what is a Ploar Performance Diagram?

Polar Diagrams

Hey Mike, Several of us 28.5 racers have been looking for a Polar Diagram for this model as well and have not come across anything. Quality Time: a Polar diagram is a circular graph of the 360 degree segments of a full circle and the coresponding theoretical speed potential of the boat at particular true wind speeds. The direction from the origin of the circle represents a particular true wind angle and the distance from the center is a plot point of the theoretical boat speed at that direction and true wind speed. Polars are typically computer generated by velocity prediction programs used by naval architects in their design process. Presumably, the crew would use the correct sail combination at a particular true wind angle and speed and check their target boat speed against the Polar Diagram. (Paraphrased from an article by Jim Marshall from 'The New Book of Sail Trim')edited by Ken Textor.

Polar's

Polar's were done only for the 35.5, this is something Hunter would have done and since the 35.5 were used for the Liberty Cup they did Polar's. Mike do you know about the Hunter 28.5 group? Cliff

To everyone who has responded, thanks I appreciate the help. This search started when I was reading Bill Seifert's book 'Offshore Sailing'. I solo sail Lake Michigan and do the GLSS Chicago to Mackinaw Singlehanded race annually. I am preparing for the Super Mac this coming season. The idea is to improve boat performance. The best I have been able to come across so far is US Sailing has diagrams for the 28, among others. Nothing specific for the 28.5 and of the diagrams they do have, they cost $170. I guess I am looking for the chart with the appropriate wind characteristics. The angular speed charts are probably useful but I'm not sure I would use them in a race, takes too much time. Mike

28.5 Group

The 28.5 group is a group I started on Yahoo, that now has over 50 member's. We discuss all thing 28.5 related and how we have the boat set up for racing and so on. It is nice to get info from other guy's that have the same boat and may have had the same problems snd our success. Cliff
