Polar Bay A/C Owners

We’ve got a Polar Bay 16,000 BTU unit on our H33. I’ve got a few questions and I'm hoping some other owners may be able to answer them:1.When the unit is in automatic mode, and the temperature is met (i.e. - 70 degrees), does you fan continue to run? Mine just keeps running, blowing air throughout the cabin, until the temperature drops enough to reenergize the system and starts blowing heated air again.2.Do you have any problem with the unit short cycling before reaching temperature? Mine will just kick off before bringing the cabin to temperature.3.Does anyone have a more detailed manual on this unit than the one that was supplied? It really provides no useful information.I’ve been working with Hunter, Dometic/Marine Air (who purchased Polar Bay) to address the problems and they’ve been helpful. But, after troubleshooting last night, now I’m not sure how the unit is supposed to behave when working correctly. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Same Unit In My 36

When mine kicks out before reaching tempeture it is always a clogged line between the strainer and through hull. On mine there is a right angle fitting on top of the through hull that gets clogged. Check to see that you have a good stream of water coming out the exit,usuall 2' out from boat.The fan does run all the time ok for the air not so nice for heat. I am pleased with the unit has worked well in 40 to 78 degree water.

Program the Control

The keypad that allows you to set the temperature has a program mode that will allow you to set the fan to shut off between cycles or to run all of the time.

Short Cycling in Heat Mode

Jason,I have a 2004 Hunter 33 and it does the same thing. I spoke with the factory over a year ago and have the following conclusions:As Larry mentioned, the keypad can be placed in programming mode to change system perameters. You can set the fan to run all of the time or stop when the compressor stops.The reason the compressor stops after a couple of minutes in heat mode is that a high pressure condition is created by warm sea water temp and the fan not blowing that heat out of the unit fast enough. Again through the keypad set the fan on high to transfer as much heat as fast as possible.To enter program mode, from sytem off hit SELECT, UP, DOWN and SELECT. P-1 = Fan speed A=auto 1-6=manual speedsP-10 = Display brightnes 4=low 13=maxP-11 = Fahrenheit or CelsiusP-12 = Cycle pump w/compressor or cont.There are more perameters, but I don't have them handy.HTH,BarryBear NecessityH33 #128

Nick I could not be happier.

I sail 99% singlhanded my wife is a passanger. The boat is very easy to sail. I have the roller furling main that I trim in to keep the boat flat. This really keeps the boat fast.The small jib keeps the hard work down.We spend the weekends on the boat from Mid May to the end of October and find it very comfortable. The only warranty problems I have had where with parts no built by Hunter. Same parts are on boats that cost twice as much. The only thing I would change is to buy different sails. The jib works but the main is very marginal. I really have to give Hunter credit for inventing a better design.

It's good to here great things about hunter and the 36,I will be retiring less two years and moving to florida west coast deciding to move up from my 290 and my wife and I love the H-36 in and out.I think hunter made a lot of great improvements to this boat,we are looking forward to owning this boat and will be asking a lot of owners until we make the move up, thank you for your input. nick

Thanks Larry, you hit it on the head with why my fan keeps running.Barry, I’ve not heard that re: the cycling problem. What temperature was the water when you were experiencing the problem? The thing that I’ve discovered with mine, when I remove the forward duct and let it flow directly into the cabin, the unit runs without short cycling and brings the cabin to temperature. This has led to researching duct sizing, and checking to see if there are any holes, leaks, etc. that would cause inadequate airflow and hence, be causing the short cycling. I’m working with Marine Air on this, so hopefully, we’ll have a resolution soon. Thanks for the input.Jason

Water Temp

Jason,I couldn't give you an exact temp, just to say that in the fall when air temp drops faster than water temp. So, probably in the high 40's or low 50's. The heat pump can pull a lot of heat out of water and needs to transfer it into cabin air or it builds up in the freon. Again the cure is to set the fan to run on high (6) setting.Barry
